US, Australia decide to deepen strategic ties with India

US, Australia decide to deepen strategic ties with India



WASHINGTON: Welcoming India's "Look East" policy, the US and Australia have agreed to deepen their strategic ties with New Delhi and identify areas of cooperation.

The joint statement, issued after the meetiing of the US- Australia Ministerial Consultations in San Francisco, said "it Welcome India's engagement with East Asia as part of its 'Look East' policy. Deepen strategic ties with India. Identify areas of potential cooperation between the US, Australia and India, including maritime security, disaster risk management and regional architecture."

It also welcomed the emergence of a stable, peaceful and prosperous China that plays a constructive role in Asian and global affairs.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta met with their Australian counterparts Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and Defense Chief Stephen Smith in San Francisco to mark the 60th anniversary of US-Australia alliance.

Both the countries supported the US-Japan alliance, which was critical to peace and security in East Asia, and the developing Australia-Japan defense and security relationship, and take steps to further increase interoperability and training opportunities among the three countries.

"Enhance trilateral policy coordination among Australia, Japan, and the US on a range of regional and global security issues through the Trilateral Strategic Dialogue and the trilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Forum," it said.

"Forged by our shared sacrifice during the World War II and affirmed in the midst of the Cold War, our alliance has succeeded in adapting and innovating to face the new challenges of the 21st Century," the statement said.
