The farmers’ protest in Bhatta Parsaul near Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh gained even more momentum after Rahul Gandhi, the general secretary of the Congress party, extended his full support to the farmers and heavily criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s administration. Mr. Gandhi, who snuck into Bhatta Parsaul village to meet with the farmers on May 11, was arrested by the Meerut Range police in a late night drama. He was released after two-and-a-half hours in custody, but a political storm followed as Mr. Gandhi accused state police officials of committing brutal acts of violence against the farmers. Congress backtracked from his statements the next day.

An editorial published in the Times of India Thursday highlighted loopholes in the archaic Land acquisition Act, 1894, and how it has been exploited by politicians all over the country to gain voters’ support. “Rahul Gandhi’s accusations of mass murder and rape in UP appear to have been exaggerated, with pending assembly elections in the state accounting for the shrill pitch.” The editorial went on to say that the charges of police atrocities against hapless villagers resisting land acquisition deserve to be investigated seriously.”
Ashok Malik, in a column in the Asian Age, wrote that the central government has to take urgent measures to change the public discourse in the coming months. “As such the six odd months from now till the end of the year are a make-or-break period for the UPA.” Mr. Malik also threw light on the fact that Rahul Gandhi’s foray into land acquisition politics was not his first attempt at such direct contact with the voters of UP.
Rajdeep Sardesai, in a letter to Rahul Gandhi published in the Hindustan Times, cited examples of the huge upsets in the state elections and toppling of age old governments in different states and said that the assembly election results confirm the Indian electorate is now more demanding than ever before. “Family surnames won’t guarantee success beyond a certain point nor will dramatic, made for TV appearances draw in the votes.” He then went on to emphasize that Rahul Gandhi’s extension of support to the farmers cannot be restricted to just Bhatta Parsaul, but take in all other Congress ruled states. He then raised a question; “Why don’t you abandon the cosy power structures of Delhi and just move bag and baggage for the next 12 months to Lucknow?”
The Asian Age Friday commented Mr. Gandhi’s actions saying; “It appears a genuine attempt at agitation politics, and is therefore to be welcomed in a large federal democracy where rulers at the national level often sit on Opposition benches in some states.” Moving on to the root cause of the problem, the editorial suggested: “The weakness Mr. Gandhi will encounter — and UP chief minister Mayawati is right here — is that his party rules the Centre and should have cleared appropriate legislation that might help farmers.”
A Friday editorial in The Hindu started by pointing out the blunder made by Mr. Gandhi regarding his unsubstantiated claims of bone ashes in the Bhatta Parsaul village, but went on to say “ground reports clearly point to excesses by the U.P. government in the two affected villages and there was absolutely no justification for the police to act brutally against the villagers.” It added that the central government must move quickly to put in place comprehensive land acquisition legislation that is fair, just, and primarily protective of the interests of millions of vulnerable farmers.
