Highlighting the importance of sports for the physical and mental development of youth, chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Sunday said that sports provides ample opportunity to imbibe team spirit, discipline, coordination and zest for achieving their goals.

"Sports provide ample opportunity to young persons to imbibe the team spirit, discipline, coordination and zest for achieving the goal," Omar said speaking at a function in Jammu.

He said athletics and non-traditional sports should also be promoted besides cricket, football and hockey.

Appreciating the Jammu and Kashmir police for encouraging sports activities in the state, the chief minister said, "It is praise worthy that despite the difficult nature of your service, you give due attention to the promotion of sports and participate in the national and international events."
