NHPC Gets a Nod to Develop Two Hydroelectric Projects Worth 2.47 Billion Dollars

New Delhi, Feb. 5: State-owned power producing company, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) (BOM: 533098) has bagged approval from the Indian Environment Ministry to develop two hydroelectric projects in Eastern Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh with a combined power generation capacity of 1,400 megawatt (MW) and involves a development cost of $2.47 billion.
The proposed projects would harness water from the Tawang Chu river in Arunachal Pradesh. NHPC design and develop the hydroelectric projects. It has 14 hydroelectric stations across the country with a total generation capacity of 5,295 MW.At present, India generates a total of 37,367 MW of electricity through hydroelectric power generation and is planning to take the figure up to reduce the the usage of fossil fuels.NHPC has also plans for adding 1,212 MW of power generation capacity by developing six more projects in the next financial year 2011-2012. The company's 231 MW Stage-III Chamera project, located on river Ravi in the northern Indian State of Himachal Pradesh is scheduled to be completed by mid-2011. The Rs. 1,405 crore project is expected to generate 1,108.17 million units of electricity annually.
