(Want to get back Cup: Gambhir

Calcutta: Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has said he will take inspiration from India’s 1983 World Cup victory ahead of this month’s showpiece event. “I definitely look to the 1983 World Cup win for inspiration as we want to get the World Cup back. We were pretty close to winning in 2003 and, hopefully, we can turn it around and win this time in India,” said Gambhir. )

Ranchi: M S Dhoni charitable foundation, in association with Rhiti Sports, felicitated budding cricketers of the city on Tuesday. The event was organised with the objective to promote young cricketers from smaller towns. The T-20 cricket tournament organised at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA)-owned International Cricket Stadium in Dhurva witnessed the participation of several teams. The Research and Development Centre in Iron and Steel (RDCIS) SAIL team defeated the Mecon team by one wicket in the final match.

The tournament, which was inaugurated by Indian skipper M S Dhoni on February 4, was aimed at identifying young cricket talent and nurturing it. During the prize distribution ceremony, Ranchi deputy commissioner K K Soan felicitated and presented a scholarship to young cricketer Welfred Beng for his outstanding performance in the matches.

Sanjay Pandey of Rhiti Sports said the scholarship would be sponsored by the M S Dhoni charitable foundation for a period of one year to help Welfred pursue a career in cricket. "Similar scholarships have been given to players in Varanasi and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh where such matches have been organised," he said.

While Gurjeet Singh bagged a motorbike after being chosen Man of the Series, Arun Vidyarthi got a Sonata wrist watch for being selected Man of the Match. Pappu Kumar Singh, Roshan Prasad and Rakesh Tiwari got Reebok cricket kits for their performance in batting, bowling and overall performance respectively.

Earlier, while inaugurating the tournament, Dhoni congratulated the organizers for coming up with the idea to promote budding players. Mahi said he's always wanted to assist players from less privileged families to come up and showcase their talent, but because of his hectic schedule he failed to do so personally. "I decided to open the matches here because I wanted to express my solidarity with the organizers who aimed at hunting out new cricket talent," he told TOI, when asked about his purpose of visiting Ranchi ahead of the busy World Cup schedule.
