Corruption, inflation hurt growth: PM -5/2/11

Corruption, inflation hurt growth: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked state governments to launch a crackdown on corruption and inflation, which he identified as two of the biggest challenges the country faces today. Octroi and local taxes could be waived to bring down costs of essential commodities, he suggested.

Speaking at the annual meeting of chief secretaries of states, Singh said inflation posed a “serious threat to the growth momentum”.

“Inflation is something which needs to be tackled with great urgency. The lasting solution for food price inflation lies in increasing agricultural productivity and production not only of cereals but also of pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and fruits and augmenting the supply of milk and milk products, poultry, meat and fish. There is need for a paradigm shift in our institutional arrangements for improving availability of various commodities to meet higher levels of domestic consumption,” he said.

State governments needed to pitch in to tackle inflation, he said. “The functioning of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee Act needs to be reviewed on an urgent basis. There seems to be a strong case for waiving mandi taxes, octroi and local taxes which impede the smooth movement of essential commodities. The public distribution system needs to be strengthened. Storage facilities have to be augmented. Supply chains need to be strengthened.”

The PM also urged the states to take on corruption “frontally, boldly and quickly”.

“Corruption strikes at the roots of good governance. It is an impediment to faster growth. It dilutes, if not negates, our efforts at social inclusion. It dents our international image and it demeans us before our own people,” he said.

Preach what you practiseBy: S L Gera | 05-Feb-2011 Reply | Forward Dear Prime Ministerji, Do not pass on your government's sins to others. The corruption and scams that have been witnessed during your regime are unparallel. Unfortunately, you have been either closing your eyes or have become completely helpless to do any thing. Inflation, rising prices, scams after scams, lawlessness, complete breakdown of the governing system have been the gift of your government. Your spokespersons, unfortunately seek solace in precedents. Your image of a clean man has been washed away. The people of this country hold you responsible for all these ills because of your functioning as a dummy Prime Minister. All is not lost yet. Your Finance Minister says that your government does have the magic rod to control prices and provide a good governance. What are you compulsions to continue and get your image maligned because of the sins committed by the members of your team under your nose? Our Jawans die for the sake of country's honour. Decide between the honour and PM.
Inflation By: Brijesh Agarwal | 05-Feb-2011 Reply | Forward Govt Should stop blame game and they should honestly take remedial steps to curb both INFLATION as well as CURRUPTION. If Politicians are real well wishers of people of INDIA, as always every political party projects them in their ELECTION MANIFESTO.

What for an analysis?By: romesh.sharma | 05-Feb-2011 Reply | Forward Chance and circumstances play great role and same time success depends more on character than on intellect.MMSingh was fortunate to be FM and his past services had won respect but as PM enormous blunders and countless follies have harmed the Nation much greater degree than his achievements as FM.The name, honour, dignity, unity, integrity, security and people's hopes of better life are sapped and are in fast decadence. For the last couple of weeks he is coming out with colourful statements of imagination and uncertainties which he didn't care for the last seven years.Remained unobstrusive and inert, cared for Sonia and her brood more than nation and utterly failed to engineer any substantial performance for people and country. The dents he was talking about are caused by him and Sonia irrepairable;devastating to the interests of nation. He was liability as I said even seven years before, later turned into a curse and now dangerous to the country. He must Go.
