(GOOD TO HEAR THIS. IF IT IS SO THEN MR RAHUL GANDHI MUST LIVE UPTO THE EXPECTATIONS!!! GOOD WISHES!!...VIBHA)

NEW DELHI: The statement putting Rahul alongside 'JP' as a youth icon saw BJP call it an attempt to belittle the stature of the 'Loknayak' while Congressmen asked how could the Gandhi family heir apparent be compared to the mascot of anti-Congressism.

The unusual spectacle of criticism from AICC and rivals alike saw spokesman Mohan Prakash make amends.

In an apparent bid to wriggle out of the tight situation, Prakash told reporters on Friday, " Rahul Gandhi has struck a chord with the youth and urged them to increase their participation in the social and political arena. His attraction among the youth is on the rise. And by this, I don't intend to compare him with anyone."

Prakash earlier said, "After Pandit Nehru, former President Kalam addressed the children of the country. Similarly after JP, Rahul Gandhi has addressed the needs, concerns and the future of the youth of the country."

It led to criticism from anti-Congress leaders who took exception to the bid to raise a newcomer to JP's level. BJP leader Arun Jaitley said, "I think it will be an attempt at lowering the stature of a leader like JP who has made great contributions to the freedom struggle."
