India Rushes to Finish Work to Host Commonwealth Games 2010

25 September, 2010

NEW DELHI: India is making a last-ditch effort to finish work of the most-talked about Commonwealth Games 2010 before October 3 the starting day. The urgency could be gauged from the fact that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh convened an emergency meeting. Sports officials also attended that meeting.

After this emergency meeting workers and officials rushed to the spot to clean the area so that after nine days the opening ceremony could be held. India is doing everything possible to manage the show on time otherwise chances are high that the Games may be boycotted by some countries.

It is an opportunity for India, a former British colony, to prove the world about its emerging global power. It is faced with a huge challenge because its neighbor country China has succeeded in holding Olympics recently. It would be interesting to see how India will manage the show.

The biggest problem that India is facing is that some of the projects are yet to be completed. Besides, some countries including New Zealand, Scotland and Canada, have delayed their arrival. This has created fear that they may boycott the Games. And if it happens so then it will be second time in the Games’ history that it has been boycotted.

Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of India’s organizing committee, said: “We will look after everybody well, and they will have a good time.”
