UP, Bihar spend highest on education in North India: Assocham

NEW DELHI: Though Uttar Pradesh and Bihar spend the most on education in North India, literacy levels in the two states still lie stagnant, industry body Assocham said today.

While UP spends 3.67 per cent of its GDP in education system modernisation, Bihar doles out as much as 5.7 per cent, it said.

Meanwhile, the average literacy rates in UP and Bihar continue to stagnate at 56.27 per cent and 47 per cent respectively, Assocham said.

The national average of GDP spent on education is estimated at 0.7 per cent.

Punjab and Haryana, which are considered as progressive states in the northern belt, spend 2.23 per cent and 2.05 per cent of their GDP on education respectively, it added.

Delhi spends 1.17 per cent on education, against its literacy rate of 81.67 per cent.
