Home Minister promises full security for M F Hussain

Home Minister promises full security for M F Hussain

New Delhi, Mar 2 : Even as eminent painter M F Hussain accepted Qatar's offer of citizenship last week, Home Minister P Chidambaram today said the Government would ensure his security if he returned to India.

''We had communicated to his family that full security would be provided to him if he comes back to the country,'' he told mediapersons after presenting his Ministry's report card for February.

Stating that there is no danger to the nonagenarian painter here, Mr Chidambaram said that there were two cases pending against the painter in the lower courts, but lawyers could take charge of that.

''There is no legal basis for any case against him, the system takes its time,'' he said.

''We would be very happy to clarify if his family wants,'' Mr Chidambaram said.

Mr Hussain has been living in exile since 2006 after some fundamentalist outfits attacked him for his portrayal of Hindu deities in the nude.

His paintings were vandalised and scores of cases were filed against him.

He accepted Qatar's offer of citizenship last week.
